Abstract
Road transport is the most widely used means of transport in Brazil, whether for moving people or cargo. However, the poor conditions of most highways cause discomfort to users, since they put safety at risk and damage tires, increasing the amount of unusable tires that are improperly discarded into the environment. One way to reuse these tires is to include rubber in the asphalt binder, which has been widely used to increase the resistance and useful life of road networks. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to compare conventional asphalt (CBUQ) and rubberized asphalt, verifying the positive and negative points of each, in order to find viable solutions to mitigate the negative impacts on highways. Bibliographic studies were carried out in articles, course completion papers (TCCs), among other materials that deal with the subject. By carrying out this work, it was expected to verify that the technique of reusing rubber in asphalt pavement is viable in terms of both quality and sustainability, when compared to the use of conventional asphalt, thus reducing the costs of periodic maintenance and the amount of tires discarded incorrectly. With the data found, it was possible to verify that the use of rubber-asphalt paving presents an increase in the cost of the work, which can be justified by the high cost of raising the machining temperatures and, on the other hand, the maintenance cost is cheaper than conventional asphalt, implying significant savings for the public coffers and concessionaires. Therefore, although conventional asphalt presents a lower initial investment than rubber-asphalt, in the long term it requires more maintenance, which makes its cost-benefit unviable.
