Abstract
This article aims to analyze the Access and Permanence Policies for indigenous students at the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ). Bibliographical research, document analysis and a questionnaire were used as data collection and generation instruments, with the aim of collecting institutional, socioeconomic and cultural information, as well as information regarding access and permanence policies at the university and how they are. experienced and problematized by indigenous students. The aim was to systematize the data collected and problems and difficulties analyzed and discussed, in addition to suggestions for proposals to improve the university's current policies regarding access and permanence of indigenous students. The data presented and discussions held show that the indigenous presence in higher education at UFSJ offers possibilities for reflections on the University's pedagogical practices and its social role. The study points out that the access and permanence of indigenous students is a huge challenge for UFSJ and that reflection and debate, combined with a more sensitive stance that respects cultural and historical aspects, as well as the knowledge of indigenous peoples can be reveal as an initial step towards the implementation of intercultural processes in the university environment. .
