Abstract
This material was produced based on the master's dissertation “Is there a school in the middle of the road? Mining and teaching geography in teaching practices in the city of Itabira/MG”. Considering the lack of materials that critically study mining activities, the aim is to contribute to the study of the socio-environmental impacts of mining on territories. The starting point is the reality of Itabira, the “iron city”, the birthplace of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (currently Vale S.A), where the activity has been carried out on a large scale for over 80 years and the impacts are enormous. The material is intended for elementary school teachers and contains texts, maps, photographs, suggestions for supplementary materials and activities that can be used in full or adapted for use in geography classes with students in the final years of elementary school and also in high school. The elements presented can be worked on in an integrated manner with the subjects of History, Natural Sciences and Portuguese Language. At the end, a proposal for field activities in the municipality of Itabira is also presented, so that students can observe the impacts of mining from the local reality.
