Abstract
This study presents a case study conducted in a machining company located in the region of Betim, Minas Gerais, aiming to compare the performance of a manual dimensional control device (mask) and a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) in the dimensional inspection of engine blocks, specifically focusing on the detection of machining displacement in critical holes. To achieve this, aspects such as inspection time, scrap rate, and operational costs were analyzed. The adopted methodology involved applied research with both quantitative and qualitative approaches, performing comparative measurements on production parts using both technologies, in addition to collecting historical data from the company’s system. The results showed that the use of the dimensional mask allowed for a reduction in total inspection time when compared to the CMM, as well as efficient identification of dimensional failures directly on the production line. A reduction in the external scrap rate was also observed, with internal retention of non-conforming parts, contributing to fewer customer complaints and less rework. Financially, the implementation of the mask resulted in lower acquisition and maintenance costs compared to the CMM, supporting its application in continuous production processes. It is concluded that the manual dimensional control device is a viable alternative to computer ized three-dimensional measurement in specific stages of the production process, especially in preliminary part inspection. Its adoption contributes to optimizing inspection time, reducing quality-related costs, and preventing non-conformities, aligning with the company’s strategic ob jectives regarding productivity and compliance with the technical requirements of the automotive sector.
