Abstract
The emergence of diagnostic engineering has enabled a systematic approach to studying major anomalies in buildings. Much like in the field of medicine, this methodology allows specialized professionals to make accurate diagnoses, develop reliable prognoses, and propose the most suitable treatment solutions for each specific case—ultimately enhancing the safety and longevity of structures. This undergraduate thesis explores the application of diagnostic engineering in the analysis of pathological manifestations in buildings, using a real-world case study of a single-family residence. The primary objective was to diagnose the causes of visible anomalies in a home located in Piumhi, Minas Gerais, by assessing its current condition and proposing appropriate repair measures. The methodology involved systematic visual inspections and photographic documentation, which revealed several pathological issues, including cracks, fissures, and detachment of surface coatings. Data analysis identified the main causes as differential foundation settlement, influenced by the characteristics of the local soil, and high capillary moisture infiltration due to excessive vegetation near the building. Based on the diagnosis, safety risks were evaluated, and corrective actions were recommended. This study contributes to improving practices in civil engineering by promoting a more effective approach to identifying and addressing structural issues, thus supporting greater building durability and safety. It also emphasizes the importance of conducting preliminary studies before initiating any construction project.
