Abstract
Faced with the need to reduce costs and make forage production more sustainable, there is growing interest in alternatives to the exclusive use of mineral fertilizers. Among these options, the use of organic fertilizers such as poultry manure stands out, as it not only supplies essential nutrients to the soil but also promotes the reuse of agro-industrial residues. This study evaluated the effect of poultry manure as an alternative fertilizer in the cultivation of elephant grass (BRS Capiaçu), compared to the use of commercial mineral fertilizers. The experiment was conducted in randomized blocks, using six treatments: five different proportions of organic and mineral fertilization (100% mineral; 75% mineral + 25% organic; 50% of each; 25% mineral + 75% organic; and 100% organic) and a control without fertilization. Variables such as dry matter yield, crude protein content, total nitrogen, neutral detergent fiber, and ash content were analyzed. The results showed that the exclusive use of poultry manure or its combination with mineral fertilizers resulted in similar dry matter productivity compared to exclusively mineral fertilization. A higher ash content was observed in the treatment with 75% organic fertilizer and 25% mineral fertilizer, highlighting the potential of poultry manure to improve forage quality. The study reinforces that using poultry manure is a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for producers, reducing expenses on mineral inputs without compromising forage yield and quality. Additionally, it supports the recycling of poultry farming residues, contributing to environmentally responsible agricultural practices. It is concluded that partial or total replacement of mineral fertilization with poultry manure can be recommended for the production of BRS Capiaçu elephant grass, maintaining good productive and nutritional indices and strengthening sustainability in beef and dairy farming.
