Abstract

Public policies aimed at Education for Ethnic-Racial relations had their initial milestone in the last decades of the 20th century and constitute crucial initiatives in guaranteeing the democratic process in Brazil, seeking to correct the present effects of discrimination practiced in the past for three centuries of slavery. Law 10,639/2003, which made the teaching of African and Afro-Brazilian history and culture mandatory, has already completed twenty years and it is still clear that there is still a long way to go before this law is effectively fulfilled within educational institutions. In this sense, the aim of this article is to analyze guidelines and initiatives from the State Department of Education of the state of Bahia aimed at Education for Ethnic-Racial Relations. The article is exploratory in nature, with a qualitative research approach, using the following methodological procedures: bibliographic and documentary survey. Through the analysis undertaken, the article demonstrates that the Department of Education of the State of Bahia directs guidelines for State School Units with regard to Education for Ethnic-Racial relations, actions that are positive and that encourage engagement in the fight for elimination discrimination and social inequality.

Espera-se que o trabalho empreendido contribua para maiores discussões sobre a história e cultura afro-brasileira e africana, tema de grande relevância no ambiente escolar.
