Abstract
In this present study, we present an experience report on the introduction of mathematical concept of Units of Mass to 6th and 7th grade classes in a municipal school located in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, MG. The development of the activity to be reported was based on the practice of collecting and measuring the mass of solid waste gathered in the classroom over the course of four 50-minute classes. Additionally, other visual resources were used to support the teaching of mathematical content, such as slide presentations and a video on the topic. The main objective was to analyze how Critical Mathematics Education, considering Skovsmose’s perspective, can be observed in the activity through the awakening of the students' environmental awareness. The results showed a significant improvement in the students’ behavior regarding the management of waste produced in the classroom and within the school environment. It is concluded that this report may serve as inspiration for similar initiatives, promoting attitudes that contribute to the preservation of the environment.
