Abstract
This research's main objective was to investigate the possible contributions of Mathematical Modeling to the learning of mathematical content by 9th grade students, based on a visit to the landfill in the city of Sabará. The central theoretical framework is based on Mathematical Modeling according to Burak and its stages. The methodology begins with a theoretical and bibliographical analysis of the topic, followed by group work sessions in which the students developed and solved mathematical problems that were produced from a visit to the landfill in the city of Sabará. Some of the data used to carry out the activities had been previously collected by the students during their visit to the landfill and others had been gathered through internet research. The activities were conducted in class and in individual meetings with the groups, following the stages defined by Burak. At the end of the process, a semi-structured questionnaire was administered to the participants to gauge their impressions of the proposed activity. The data collected, along with the analyses carried out, highlight the relevance of Mathematical Modeling in the teaching-learning process, making the teaching of Mathematics more interesting and connected to reality, contributing towards a critical and conscious education of the students. The practical experience was well received by the students, who showed interest in similar activities. The activity also promoted environmental awareness and developed critical and practical math skills.
