Abstract
The teaching of mathematics plays a crucial role in students' academic development and preparation for life. Mathematics is not merely a school subject but a fundamental skill essential for students' futures. Teaching mathematics to 5th-grade students is a complex task because, at this stage, students are transitioning between Primary School (Ensino Fundamental I) and Middle School (Ensino Fundamental II), which differ in structure, organization, and the educational training of the professionals working in these early and later stages. The purpose of this study is to analyze the challenges faced by teachers with degrees in Pedagogy when teaching Mathematics. The central premise is to understand how the lack of specific training in Mathematics impacts teaching quality, the challenges these teachers encounter, and how they approach the subject with students. This study examines the importance of mathematics in this final year of Primary School, the challenges teachers face, students' difficulties, and the influence of the National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB) and the Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC) on teaching practices. The research was conducted through a review of existing literature on the topic and bibliographic analysis of various authors who have studied the subject. Some findings from the research indicate that teachers with only a Pedagogy degree are aware of the importance of Mathematics but often lack an affinity for the subject. Consequently, they struggle to teach it effectively, making this a significant and concerning factor for mathematics instruction in the classroom.
