MARIANA ALÉM DO OURO: A Invisibilidade das Capelas Históricas no Turismo e Seus Desafios de Conservação

Abstract
The study examines the invisibility of Mariana’s historic chapels within local tourism, showing that, despite their historical, architectural, and religious value, these heritage sites receive little visibility in tourist routes and public policies. The research discusses the factors that contribute to this marginalization — such as the predominance of gold as the city’s main identity symbol, limited promotion and investment, and structural and institutional barriers to preservation. The work also highlights the main challenges for the conservation of these chapels and argues for integrated cultural policies, educational initiatives, and the inclusion of these sites in heritage tourism as a way to strengthen local memory and identity.
Resumo
O trabalho analisa a invisibilidade das capelas históricas de Mariana no contexto do turismo local, mostrando como esses bens culturais, apesar de seu valor histórico, arquitetônico e religioso, recebem pouca atenção nas rotas e políticas turísticas. A pesquisa discute os fatores que contribuem para essa marginalização — como a priorização do ouro como principal símbolo identitário da cidade, a falta de divulgação e investimentos, além de limitações estruturais e institucionais para conservação. O estudo também aponta os desafios para preservação dessas capelas e defende a necessidade de políticas culturais integradas, ações educativas e inclusão desses espaços no turismo patrimonial como forma de fortalecer a memória e a identidade local.
