Abstract
The aim of this research was to understand how the dam collapse of Córrego do Feijão Mine affected the lives of students at IFMG – Ibirité Campus. The research was conducted with third-year students of technical courses integrated into high school, residing in the towns of Brumadinho and Sarzedo. The study focused on the collapse of the aforementioned dam, owned by Vale S.A., which occurred in Brumadinho, highlighting the social and environmental impacts resulting from this crime tragedy, within the context the participants are embedded in, as well as their experiences and interpretations in an environment marked by mining activity. One sought to identify how students perceive and position themselves in relation to the dam collapse consequences, especially regarding their quality of life and educational progress. The premise is that IFMG students living in Brumadinho and Sarzedo are directly or indirectly affected by mining activities, which have significant repercussions on social, environmental and economic aspects. Therefore, the main question guiding this work is: How the dam collapse of Córrego do FeijãoMineaffected the lives of IFMG students – Ibirité Campus? The study is based on the principles of integral and omnilateral human development, as well as Paulo Freire's emancipatory perspective, with the aim of promoting critical reflection on the impacts of mining. A qualitative approach was adopted for the research, using semi-structured interviews as the data collection technique. Interpretation and analysis were guided by the hermeneutic-dialectical method. The results showed that the students, in their accounts, expressed both a critical stance towards social and environmental impacts of mining and an acknowledgementofpotential economic and social benefits arising from this activity. In this sense, the research proposes reflections that can contribute to the development of critical awareness within the school community, aligned with the principles of comprehensive and omnilateral human development. An e-book that brings together narratives of the participants whose lives were impacted by the Brumadinho dam collapse was created as an educational product linked to the research. This proposal seeks to foster dialogue and critical reflection between different fields of knowledge, expanding the possibilities for the development of interdisciplinary practices.
