Abstract
This master's dissertation aims to revive the debate on the socio-environmental impacts of mining in the city of Itabira (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and explore the connections between these impacts and the pedagogical practices of Geography teachers in the municipality. Known as the "city of iron," Itabira is the birthplace of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, founded in 1942 and now one of the largest mining companies in the world. The research is based on a literature review that presents the historical context of the mining industry in Itabira and its socio-environmental impacts. It analyzes the guiding documents for pedagogical practice in Geography (BNCC and CRMG) and the didactic materials used in schools to explore how the theme of mining is represented. Additionally, through the use of questionnaires, the study investigates how Geography teachers in state and municipal schools in Itabira incorporate the theme into their pedagogical practices and reflects on the role of schools and Geography within the context of public education in Brazil.
