Abstract
The case study on the effects of a poorly defined scope in a civil works contract for a mining company, referred to as the Contracting Party, reveals that changes in the project scope throughout the contract had significant impacts on the cost and timeline of the project. The lack of clarity in specifications and delays in the delivery of detailed engineering caused difficulties in project execution, leading to additional costs, extended deadlines, and rework. The research, conducted between June and July 2024, during which data collection, analysis, and result development activities took place, used a qualitative approach based on document analysis to identify patterns and variables that could explain the challenges and operational dynamics faced by the Contractor in the specific context of the study. The study highlighted the importance of efficient scope management for project success, showing that unclear specifications, delays in the delivery of detailed engineering, and lack of coordination resulted in additional costs, extended deadlines, and financial losses. The project, initially budgeted at R$72.025 million, also revealed that the untimely issuance of Service Order 03 (OS3), scope reductions, and constant revisions of the projects compromised the project's viability and caused significant damage to its execution and the original budget, leading to a substantial reduction in the estimated value to R$47.726 million. This caused delays in the mobilization of essential resources, such as labor and equipment, negatively impacting the physical progress of the project and the financial estimate.
