Abstract
Current environmental problems, such as the Anthropocene, global warming, and environmental degradation, stem from the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. Rural and indigenous populations, who practice family farming, play a key role in biodiversity conservation due to their sustainable use of resources and knowledge passed down through generations. However, they face challenges such as limited productivity and restricted access to natural resources and technical assistance. Participatory research emerges as an alternative to conventional research, valuing local and indigenous knowledge (ILK) and promoting socio-environmental advancements. This multidisciplinary approach seeks to integrate science and society, offering more sustainable and inclusive solutions. An example of this was the project carried out with quilombola communities, farmers, and students, where the implementation of community gardens proved effective for transformative environmental education. The practical experience stimulated learning, socio-environmental awareness, and teamwork, while also valuing family farming as a means of subsistence and environmental conservation. Rural extension plays an important role by connecting researchers and rural communities, strengthening family farming, and encouraging sustainable practices. Participatory research, therefore, emerges as an essential pathway for social and environmental transformation, combining scientific and traditional knowledge, economic development, and human well-being.
