Abstract
The lack of green areas in urban centers has been an unfortunate urban reality, with the development of cities this perception becomes even more evident. With a focus on minimizing the damage of this situation, new sustainable techniques are being applied along with others that have been in existence for several years, such as green roofs. Sustainable roofs have the same function as conventional ones, but more than that, they help fight heat islands, retain water, reduce noise pollution, among other advantages. Conventional ceramic and fiber-cement roofs will be discussed. This research addresses the main characteristics of each method. In addition, spreadsheets were developed that present an estimate of the real cost of implementation. Due to several factors, the installation value of a green roof is more expensive when compared to conventional ones, but one must take into account the various advantages it has. One of the reasons that makes the cost of this technique higher is the demand, since, as it is still low, there are few specialized companies in the field, which reduces competition. Some cities in Brazil have already included the use of green roofs in municipal laws, but their use is still not widespread. Public policies and incentives regarding its use must be developed, seeking to make the environment and urban growth compatible.
