Abstract
Retaining structures are responsible for resisting lateral thrust exerted by a mass of soil and/or rock. The design of these structures involves two types of sizing: geotechnical and structural. This work aims to produce a calculation spreadsheet for the geotechnical sizing of gravity and flexural retaining walls, using Microsoft Excel software. The production of this study is based on a bibliographic review and documentary and applied research regarding the sizing of retaining walls. This structures can be constructed using plain or reinforced concrete, brick masonry, bagged soil-cement, or stone blocks. The spreadsheet developed in this work performs the geotechnical sizing of gabion, masonry, and reinforced concrete retaining walls. Geotechnical sizing includes preliminary design of the retaining structure, calculation of active and passive thrusts, and stability checks for sliding, overturning, and base stresses, but does not include structural sizing of the reinforced concrete wall. For the verification of the tool, three exercises taken from reference books were solved manually and using the tool. The results obtained were compared, and through this comparison, it was possible to conclude that the spreadsheet accurately and quickly performs the geotechnical sizing of the proposed types of retaining structures in this work, despite some limitations observed during the development and varification of the tool.
