Abstract
This work aims to present the experience report of the technical execution of restorative interventions on the ceiling of the nave of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, located in the municipality of Mariana, popularly known as Mariana’s Cathedral of the See – Minas Gerais. Its objective is to describe the methodology applied in the practice of restorative processes and procedures, which sometimes, in the professional field of conservation and restoration, differ from the previously developed projects due to discrepancies between the technical information contained in surveys/diagnostics and the actual condition of the object to be restored. The work provides contextual information about the formation of the city, as well as the evolutionary process of the Cathedral to accommodate the rich historical significance of the first Archdiocese established in the interior of Colonial Brazil. It presents details from the intervention project developed for the ceiling, including the problems and degradations found on-site, as well as the technical solutions implemented during the restoration process. Throughout the work, it was possible to identify the difficulties and setbacks encountered during the restoration, which required various actions, especially considering the pandemic period that created an atypical scenario impacting the execution of the proposed tasks. Thus, this report highlights the necessity and importance of developing projects that are compatible with the real conservation status of cultural assets, as well as the complexity involved in the work of a conservation and restoration professional.
