Abstract
This work investigates the advances and applications of smart glass in civil construction, highlighting its potential to promote energy efficiency, environmental comfort, and occupant well-being. Initially, different types of smart glass are presented, such as liquid crystal, electrochromic, and photochromic glasses, with a detailed analysis of their characteristics and functioning. The research examines how light transmission modulation, through the application of electric fields, influences the molecular orientation of liquid crystals and consequently light transmission. Additionally, the study analyzes the impacts of smart glass on energy efficiency and solar control in buildings, demonstrating how the adaptation of these glasses to environmental conditions can optimize natural light entry, reducing energy consumption for lighting and climate control. The possibilities of integrating smart glass with automation systems are also explored, providing greater operational efficiency. Finally, economic and sustainability aspects are discussed, emphasizing the environmental and well-being benefits provided by this innovative technology. The work concludes with a reflection on recent advancements and future prospects for the development and implementation of smart glass in civil construction, consolidating its relevance as a promising solution for sustainable and technologically advanced buildings.
