Abstract
This study aims to compare the SPI and SPEI drought indices in characterizing droughts in the state of Minas Gerais between 2020 and 2023, using meteorological data from INMET. The indices were calculated and classified according to drought severity tables from the literature, then compared with each other and with the records of the Brazilian Drought Monitor. The results indicate that both SPI and SPEI indices did not show agreement with the Drought Monitor for Moderate Drought, Severe Drought, Extreme Drought, and Exceptional Drought levels. Additionally, the number of matches between SPI/Monitor and SPEI/Monitor was similar, with Weak Drought being the most predominant severity. The study showed that the presence of the SRI in the combination of indices that make up the Drought Monitor may be one of the reasons for the low agreement between it and the other indices.
