Abstract
This thesis investigates the cultural significance of the Zé Pereira of Club dos Lacaios in Ouro Preto, highlighting its relevance in the carnival tradition and the lack of in-depth knowledge about this historic association. The study aims to demonstrate the integration of Zé Pereira into the local culture and its essential role as a promoter of Carnival. Document analysis and semi structured interviews with key community figures, including historians, folklorists, and association members, were conducted. The research reveals that Zé Pereira not only preserves centuries-old traditions but also promotes social inclusion and community participation, involving people of all ages and social classes. Additionally, Zé Pereira plays a crucial role in the local economy by attracting tourists and generating significant economic activity during the carnival period. The findings indicate that Zé Pereira is fundamental for the preservation of Brazilian cultural identity, ensuring that future generations can value and perpetuate this cultural expression. The continuity of this tradition is vital for maintaining the intangible heritage of Ouro Preto, reinforcing community bonds and the city’s cultural identity. Thus, Zé Pereira of Club dos Lacaios emerges as a symbol of cultural resistance and an emblem of Ouro Preto’s rich historical heritage, perpetuating a tradition that continues to enchant and unite generations.
