Abstract
Maintaining the reliability and safety of power transmission systems requires periodic inspections, but challenges such as accessibility, adverse weather conditions, and the large scale of networks make comprehensive monitoring difficult. Many utilities adopt inspections on a sample basis or at longer intervals, which can compromise early detection of faults. In this context, drone technology emerges as an innovative solution, allowing for more comprehensive coverage of transmission lines and the generation of accurate digital data for predictive maintenance. This study analyzes the main automated inspection methods based on drones in high-voltage systems and compares their costs with traditional techniques. The results indicate that, despite the high initial investment, the adoption of drones provides greater operational efficiency, reduced risks for workers, shorter response times in identifying faults, and significant long-term cost savings. In addition to their economic viability, the study reinforces the potential of drones to modernize power grid maintenance, contributing to their large-scale adoption by companies in the energy sector and driving advances in the digital transformation of electrical infrastructure.
