Abstract
The grimpa is a mechanism made of metal, located mostly in the towers of 18th century churches in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In addition to sometimes having the function of showing the direction of the wind, this ornamental object uses references from Christian and pagan iconography in its composition. This Final Paper aims to catalog the grimpas in the 18th century churches of Minas Gerais. This research is justified by the scarcity of studies and publications on this topic in Brazil. From the presentation of the grimpa's history, this research will seek to explain the way of manufacture, the materials used and the meanings of the ornamental elements, in addition to aspects that involve the assembly and installation of the grimpas, consolidating a wide catalog of this asset integrated in the religious buildings of Minas Gerais. It is hoped that this study will help future research on this topic and serve as a reference in the recovery and preservation of the grimpa in Minas Gerais, and in Brazil.
