Abstract
Heat treatment can be considered as the controlled heating or cooling process of metallic materials, and aims to modify their physical and mechanical properties, without modifying their final geometry. This work intends to evaluate the influence of temperature and quenching and tempering times on the mechanical properties of SAE 1045 steel. A temperature for quenching and another for tempering was evaluated: respectively 850 and 550°C using water forced convection for the quenching process. For tempering subsequent cooling was carried out in the open air. Both thermal treatments were carried out with a duration of 45 minutes, however during the development of the work, it was verified that the duration of the heat treatments depends on the mass and dimensions of the material under study. Therefore, the approach of the times used is not adequate and needs to be reviewed in future works. The evaluation of the mechanical properties was carried out through tensile tests, and the result were compared with works in the literature, using the same steek, same treatments, but with different temperature conditions.
