Abstract
The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the extent to which the docents’ social representation has contributed to the changes of the IFMG (Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology) – Campus Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, Brazil, since it was nominated as ETFOP (Federal Technical School of Ouro Preto), and then as CEFET-OP (Federal Centre of Technological Education), in order to comprehend the institute's history. The theoretical scope was built around ideas that addressed the theory of social representation as well as professional and technological education in order to accomplish the goal. Via semi-structured interviews, the methodology was based on qualitative and interpretive concepts. The content analysis was used to do the data analysis. Participating in the research were eleven docents from the IFMG – Campus Ouro Preto, who have worked at the institute over its three historical periods. The results indicate that the institute is well-regarded, with particular attention given to the changes that have occurred during the period of the institute's seventy-nine-year existence. In a favourable light, an advancement in academic development has been identified as a result of not only an increase in the number of available courses, but also an expansion of the institute area. There has been some documented criticism regarding the reduction in staff, particularly the docent reduction. Based on the docents’ social representation, an educational ebook titled "From Technical School to Federal Institute – Campus Ouro Preto - an excellence.
