Abstract
This study discusses the level of animal welfare applied to the sector of dairy cattle at IFMG - Bambuí, verifying aspects related to its importance and history. A descriptive study was carried out to identify and understand the current situation of this productive sector, through the perspective of the five domains applied to animal welfare, namely: nutritional, environmental, sanitary, behavioral and mental. Regarding the first domain mentioned, it was certified good efficiency of the production system, except for the presence of a small batch of males with bad body conditions. In the environmental domain, the sector provides a pleasant environment on the food court, and one should be aware of the presence of some damage to the floor and pasture pickets, where shading is limited. The sanitary domain counts on the presence of an efficient vaccination calendar, vermifuges, and management practices that have shown efficiency due to low mortality, occurrence of diseases, hoof problems and mastitis. In the behavioral domain, there is a satisfactory possibility for the expression of natural behaviors as the animals remain together both in the feeding lane and in the pasture paddocks. Regarding the mental domain, it was influenced by the other domains, negatively highlighting the occurrence of bad bodily conditions in some males. However, it is noteworthy that there is a capable team that deals with the animals. The animal welfare practices of the dairy cattle sector at IFMG – Campus Bambuí are satisfactory, and small adjustments may be necessary in the nutritional and environmental domains.
