Abstract
This case study investigated strategies for the control and treatment of mastitis on a dairy farm, focusing on milking practices, hygiene, and treatment efficacy, as well as their impact on cow health and productivity. Conducted at Betânia Farm in Oliveira, Minas Gerais, the study employed data collection through interviews with the manager and staff, direct observation of practices and management records, and diagnostic tools such as the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and microbiological cultures to identify subclinical mastitis and pathogenic agents. The results revealed a mastitis incidence of 25.3% among lactating cows, with higher prevalence in younger and high-producing animals. The study also highlighted the effectiveness of practices such as pre-dipping, post-dipping, and targeted antibiotic use, which contributed to improved mastitis management. The adoption of specific milking and hygiene protocols proved critical for preventing new infections and ensuring milk quality. The proposed strategies demonstrated potential for enhancing herd health and reducing costs associated with treatment and milk disposal, fostering a more sustainable and efficient production system. This work emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring and the implementation of well-founded prophylactic and therapeutic measures as key pillars for the effective control of bovine mastitis in dairy production systems.
