Abstract
This research aims to analyze the factors that influence the students' avoidance of the Subsequent Technical Course in Mining at the IFMG – Congonhas Campus. The option for this course is justified due to the high dropout rates that it has presented in a context of regional demands favorable to the search for professional qualification in the area of training offered by the Institution. Evasion and retention are problems that have stood out in Brazilian education for many decades, and currently, within the Federal Institutes, it has mobilized the Federal Government to implement measures to diagnose its causes, and as well as seek solutions. According to these concerns, in this research, a qualitative investigation was carried out, with the application of questionnaires, interviews and documentary research. The subjects of the investigation were the students who were in situation of school evasion in the Subsequent Technical Course. The data were analyzed based on the conceptual model proposed by Rumberger and Lim (2008) that highlight the influence of individual and Institutional factors. The results lead us to infer that evasion occurred by a sum of individual and institutional factors. In the individual factors we highlight the access to the campus, the difficulties of learning and financial difficulties that leads the student to choose the work to the detriment of the training. In the institutional factors, we highlight the rigidity of the curriculum, difficulties of access to student aid, lack of accompaniment with the student, absence of practical classes and technical visits.
