Abstract
Brazil has one of the largest equine herds in the world, highlighting the cultural and economic importance of the species in the country. However, prolonged confinement of horses—a common practice in urban areas and rural properties—can compromise their well- being and trigger stereotypic behaviors such as crib-biting (aerophagia) and wood-chewing (lignophagia). These disorders are associated with frustration, boredom, and deprivation of natural behaviors, such as continuous grazing. To mitigate these effects, this study proposed the development of a handmade, low-cost slow feeder prototype that simulates natural foraging behavior, prolongs feeding time, and reduces idle periods. The research was applied in nature, with a qualitative approach and experimental focus. The prototype was designed based on bibliographic references, prioritizing accessible, safe, and durable materials suitable for use in stables. The structure consists of a wooden box with a lid containing a mesh to restrict access to hay. The device was validated for structural and functional feasibility. Although it has not yet been tested on animals, the model shows potential to improve feeding management, reduce behavioral disorders, and promote the physical and psychological well- being of stabled horses, especially on small and medium-sized farms.
