Abstract
Literacy results in the learning of reading and writing with comprehension. According to Magda Soares (2020), it is essential for social and economic development, as well as fundamental for communication and interaction in society. This research addresses the criteria used for approving students in the literacy phase in the municipality of Ouro Branco/MG, a relevant topic to understand the concept of literacy adopted by the Municipal Schools of Ouro Branco-MG. Thus, the research aims to understand how student approval is conducted during the literacy stage and whether it is beneficial for them. The nature of the research was qualitative, aiming to understand situations through data collection, studying the experiences lived and their interaction with the researched field. Data collection involved documentary research and a questionnaire with objective questions. The documentary research aimed to practically understand the literacy concept adopted in the public schools of Ouro Branco. The results indicated that, for the interviewed literacy teachers, the relationship between family and school is an essential factor in the teaching and learning process. Additionally, most teachers expressed concerns regarding the time allocated for literacy, highlighting that the demands of subsequent grades often conflict with skills that were not consolidated in previous years, resulting in significant gaps. It is hoped that this research will contribute to future discussions and reflections on the importance of well-defined criteria for approving students in the literacy phase, ensuring fairer and more effective teaching.
