Abstract
This study explores the epistemology of space in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, through a critical analysis of official narratives and the use of urban space by its inhabitants. Through qualitative research (bibliographic survey, participant observation and documentary analysis), the research reveals contradictions between the official Eurocentric vision and the marks of slavery and Afrocentricity present in the city. Urban hermeneutics and phenomenology are used to interpret the meanings of the space and the experiences of the inhabitants. The research highlights the struggle for recognition and re-signification of Afro-descendant history, manifested in various forms of cultural and social expression. The epistemology of space in Ouro Preto is complex and multifaceted, marked by contradictions and tensions. The research revealed that the official narratives of Ouro Preto, often marked by a Eurocentric vision, mask the contradictions and tensions present in the urban space. The analysis of the marks of slavery and Afrocentricity in the city highlighted the struggle for recognition and re- signification of Afro-descendant history, which manifests itself in different forms of cultural and social expression. The results of the research indicate that the epistemology of space in Ouro Preto is complex and multifaceted, marked by contradictions between official narratives and the use of space by the inhabitants. The valorization of the Afro-descendant heritage and the construction of a more plural narrative of the city's history is a challenge.
