Abstract
This work aims to present three protection methods against atmospheric discharges applied in a museum, based on technical and scientific guidelines. The study also intents to analyze the materials used in all subsystems (capture, downconductors, intermediate rings, and grounding) in order to provide a comprehensive investigation of the Lightning Protection System (LPS) specified by each method. To achieve the aforementioned objectives, data from the building, structure, surroundings, topography, atmospheric discharge density in the region and population were examined, in addition to other relevant factors. Based on this analysis, it were determined both the protection class and configuration of the LPS besides the Surge Protection Measures (SPM). Protection methods against atmospheric discharges named Franklin, Faraday Cage, Electrogeometric, and Hybrid were used. Each method was implemented according to the standards established by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), such as NBR 5419 and NBR 5410. Furthermore, specific regulations from the local power utility were considered. The three protection methods against lightning applied in a museum were compared using a classification system with a numerical scale which were developed to evaluate each method considering several technical criteria. The obtained results demonstrated the effectiveness of the methods used, emphasizing the matter of choosing appropriate materials and its suitable implementation in the capture, downconductors, and grounding subsystems. These information are essential to ensure adequate protection against atmospheric discharges, in compliance with the standards established by competent institutions.
