Abstract
This study carried out a solid waste management diagnosis through the selective collection, within the scope of the National Solid Waste Policy, in eight towns in the Central West region of Minas Gerais, including Pains, Formiga, Córrego Fundo, Arcos, Iguatama, Doresópolis, Piumhi and Pimenta. The objective of this research was to identify and evaluate the main difficulties to implant and implement municipal selective collection programs. It also aimed to check how the compliance with current legislation is in relation to the final destination of solid waste in the mentioned towns. The data collection of the research was carried out in three stages; the first consisted of bibliographical reviews, the second in field research and the third in systematization and analysis of results. Semi- structured questionnaires were used as data collection tools that were applied in interviews with the municipal managers of all the towns of the research. To evaluate the management of the selective collection in the towns that have the management implanted and in operation, were used indicators and indices of sustainability proposed by Besen et al. (2016). The results could provide the policymakers and the garbage collectors' organizations to propose actions and recommendations to strengthen the programs. The Research has shown that the programs surveyed face several problems related to the Efficiency, Working Conditions, Worker Health and Safety and Costs aspects.
