Abstract
Animal carcasses and animal by-products do not have suitable environmental regulations regarding their disposal in Brazil. The huge amount of illegal animal slaughter and the inappropriate disposal of animal by-products are huge environmental and public health problems. Moreover, the animal deaths caused by accidents, illnesses and electrocution also produce environmental liabilities, whether the tailing is not suitably collected and disposed. In other countries, such waste is regulated and specifically classified in order to be co-processed as alternative fuel for the cement industry, rendered as meat and bone meal. This work aims at carrying out a study on the technical and economical possibilities of co-processing meat and bone meal at a cement factory in the central west of the State of Minas Gerais. The volumes of deaths were calculated from the statistical data of the herds. A composition of alternative fuels co-processed at a cement factory in the region and the financial impact of the introduction of the meat and bone meal were verified. An analysis of the technical and economical possibilities of the implementation of animal carcasses and by-products processing unity was carried out. That unit will produce meat and bone meal which will be headed to the cement and tallow factories for biodiesel production. Both viability of the construction of a deaths and by-products processing unity and the financial impact of the introduction of meat and bone meal were confirmed, showing that the possibilities of environmental, social and economical profits are possible for the region.
