Abstract
Among the many tree species cultivated for industrial purposes, eucalyptus is recognized for its short production cycle and characteristics that allow for versatile applications. Brazil stands out in this context, in which it presents an extensive planted area, with the state of Minas Gerais being one of the main eucalyptus producing states in the country. Basic density is an important physical property in the characterization of wood, where this property can be influenced by the position of the sample in the tree, as well as by environmental conditions. Therefore, this work has as an objective, to determine the basic density of Eucalyptus cloeziana wood in different radial positions, in order to verify the influence of age, as well as tension wood and opposite. For the execution of the work, three individuals of Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell. with approximately 10 years in steep terrain, in the municipality of São João Evangelista in the state of Minas Gerais, were slaughtered. From these, discs of approximately 4cm thick, were removed in different longitudinal positions (0%, DAP, 25%, 50%, 75%). The discs were demarcated in the upper position of the sloping terrain (tension wood) and lower than the slope of the trunk (opposite wood), and subdivided into 4 radial portions. The measured values of basic density, in different radial positions for tension and opposite wood at different longitudinal positions, underwent descriptive statistical analysis using BoxPlot and KruskalWallis tests, and Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni correction, both at a significance level of 5% probability. The results revealed that no significant differences were found in basic density based on tension and opposite wood, with basic density variation in the radial direction showing a quadratic behavior, with an increase in the radial direction.
