Abstract
Gigantism in cattleisanabnormalitycharacterizedbyabove-normal sizeandweight, withvariousnamessuch as Giant CalfSyndrome, Giant NeonateSyndrome, amongothers. Thisdisorderhasgreateconomicrelevance for livestockfarmers, as it increasestheriskofdystocia, whichcanresult in fetal hypoxiaandneurologicaldamage in thecow. Thesecomplicationsaffecttheir motor capacity, compromisetheirabilitytobreastfeedand make it difficult for thecalftoingestcolostrum. Furthermore, dystociafavorspostpartumcomplications, such as retained placenta, hypocalcemiaandmetritis, whichnegativelyimpactsthecow'sentryintolactation. Postpartum management, colostrum, navelhealing, goodhygieneconditionsandphysicalandthermalcomfort are essentialtoensurethatthecalf'sfirstmomentsoflife are lesschallengingandcontributeto its greaterdevelopment. The case descriptionaimstoreport a case ofgigantism in a newborn, resultingfromthe crossing by artificial inseminationbetween a Girolando F1 cowand a Tabapuã bull. The case led totheoccurrenceofdystocia, withsubsequenteuthanasiaofthemotherafterbirthandthecalf, whichfaced a series ofclinicalcomplications, including pneumonia, BPD, arthritisandomphalitis, culminating in euthanasiaafter 30 daysoflife. Failures in colostrum management contributedtothecalf'scomplications, which, despitetreatment, didnot show aneffective response. Necropsyfindingsindicatedchanges in thelungs, joints, liverand umbilical structure. Proper management, especiallywithregardtocolostrumandassistanceduringbirth, isessentialtoreducepostpartumcomplicationsand minimize maternal and neonatal mortality, contributingtothereductionofeconomiclosses for theproducer.
