Abstract
Suspensory ligament desmitis of the fetlock is a common pathology in athletic horses, resulting in lameness and compromising sports performance. Characterized by inflammation of the ligament, it occurs mainly due to overloading of the limb during exercise. This study aims to report the case of a 3-year-old male Mangalarga marchador horse with aptitude for marcha picada and a history of lameness in the left forelimb, and review the scientific literature on fetlock ligament desmitis, addressing its etiology, pathophysiology, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment. After diagnosis, which combined physical and imaging examinations, treatments such as anti-inflammatories, oral supplementation and different rehabilitation techniques were instituted. For a deeper understanding of this pathology, it is essential to establish an early diagnosis and an effective treatment that aims to optimize the recovery of affected animals and ensure a safe return to activities.
