Abstract
Sustainability has become a common theme in the business field since the 1980s because it is known as an important element in the search for a competitive advantage in a sustainable management. In this master thesis, the research question was: Are micro and small businesses from Patos de Minas city in Minas Gerais state sustainable? This master thesis aimed at evaluating the extent of adherence to the sustainable development of micro and small businesses from Patos de Minas, Minas Gerais. To evaluate the sustainability index of these businesses an adapted version of the methodology proposed by Leoneti Nirazawa e Oliveira (2016) was applied. Environmental, social, and economical dimensions were used to: a) select the criteria for the Sustainability Index for micro and small businesses; b) Apply the Sustainability Index method in micro and small businesses from Patos de Minas, Minas Gerais; and c) analyze the results of the Sustainability Index which show to what extent the micro and small businesses from Patos Minas are sustainable. The methodology used was descriptive and quantitative and the data was obtained applying a survey in 44 micro and small businesses of food (bakery, bars and restaurants) and hotels in Patos de Minas. The obtained data was analyzed through descriptive statistics using tables, graphics and comparative analyzes. The results shown that micro and small businesses have a sustainability adherence index of 71.64%. Therefore, the results show that local businesses have propensity to carry out actions based on the environmental criteria adherent to sustainability in businesses, having adherence of 77.27% in social dimension and the lowest adherence of 61.36% in economical dimension
