Abstract
Among the main objectives of the National Policy on Solid Waste are the encouragement to the adoption of sustainable patterns of production and consumption, the adoption, development, and improvement of clean technologies as a way to minimize environmental impacts, the reduction of the volume and hazardousness of waste, the encouragement to the recycling industry, the integrated management of solid waste, and the encouragement to the development of environmental and business management systems aimed at the improvement of production processes and the reuse of solid waste, including recovery and energy use. This research aims to know the gravimetric composition and calorific power of footwear waste, to present new methods for destination, and by means of energy valuation tests, to reveal the potential of this waste for use as fuel in cement factories. The footwear solid residues generated in the factories are collected by service companies, which are in charge of their collection, transport, and management. RECINOVA - EIRELI M/E is one of the companies that collect industrial residues in Nova Serrana - MG, and that provided the data for this research. Currently, the footwear factories outsource the destination of the solid residue produced, because they are being obliged to license and correctly dispose of this waste, which used to be placed in the streets and collected by the city hall and by scavengers. In addition, the gravimetric characterization of the materials was performed. Industrial activities have many positive effects on the economic and social gains of a country, but, on the other hand, they can also be synonymous with considerable environmental losses. The high-volume production processes in this industry generate solid waste, such as leftover materials or defective products. The improper disposal of this waste harms the environment, generates health risks, and even compromises the company's own development. This situation shows how to effectively manage this waste is a pressing environmental issue.
