Abstract
Leadership is a central element in people management, as it directly influences employee behavior, engagement, and motivation within organizational environments. In the retail context, characterized by high competitiveness, constant performance targets, and intense customer interaction, the role of leadership becomes even more relevant to team performance. In this scenario, this study conducted a systematic literature review aimed at analyzing how leadership impacts the motivation of teams operating in the retail sector. Searches were carried out in the CAPES Journal Portal and Google Scholar, resulting in the selection of 12 articles after the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The most frequently cited work among the studies was General Theory of Administration by Maximiano (2010), highlighting its theoretical relevance to the topic. The thematic analysis allowed the classification of the articles into three categories: leaders (3 studies), employees (6 studies), and a mixed approach involving both leaders and employees (3 studies). The findings indicate that participative and transformational leadership styles enhance team motivation, whereas authoritarian practices, lack of feedback, and excessively high performance targets are associated with demotivation. It is concluded that leadership plays a central role in engagement and performance in the retail sector, reinforcing the importance of human-centered management practices focused on employee development.
